Studying can be overwhelming and time-consuming when it comes to busy schedules and trying to find time for yourself. College has me feeling like I have so much time to do anything, but not enough time to do everything. Wanting to fit professional and personal life into my day was something I struggled with coming into college, but now I’ve been able to balance these lifestyles the best that I can. Here are some tips and tricks I have of getting into the G R O O V E of things for school.
It’s my second year, here, at Iowa State and I’ve stumbled upon bumps in the road when it comes to finding the best way for me to study. As a biology major and chemistry minor, I’ve definitely done my fair share of studying these past two years. As I’ve been able to maintain Dean’s List status these past 3 semesters, my journey of how to study might help you find your way as well.
TIP #1: Set aside as much time to do your homework.
I know that doing homework isn’t the most glamourous thing to do on campus, but you need to take it as it is. Once you accept it for what it is, you kind of get over it. To prepare for my week, especially when it’s busy, I like to do all of my homework for the week on SUNDAY. This includes assignments that are reoccurring or mini-quizzes that are given through Canvas. Assignments that are longer I give more time into the week, but because I’ve finished everything else I have more time to focus on them. This also gives you personal time during the week instead of having to do homework.
TIP #2: Make friends with your place of study.
I recommend NOT to study ON YOUR BED. You associate sleep and comfort in your bed, which causes you to fall asleep. Find somewhere in your house, or even somewhere in town, that gives you that flow of productivity. For me, this is the library. I can spend HOURS in the library. This also helps if you have friends that like to GRIND out their studying like you as well. Finding a place and people that help you study makes studying more fun and easier to do.
TIP #3: Make your notes pretty!
I find that the best way for me to look back at my notes is to make them visually pleasing. During class, I take down notes of things the professor emphasizes. When I start studying for the exam, I look back on these notes as well as the slides from the professor and RE-DO ALL OF THE NOTES. But pretty. Writing down the material again helps me absorb the information one more time as well as gives me nice study material to look back on.
HOPE THESE HELP A LITTLE!
